Jack Goldstein’s 16mm film Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (1975) belongs to one of the visual icons of video art: Goldstein deconstructed the famous emblem of the Hollywood studios by removing the letters “Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer”. The result is a minimalistic film sequence representing the roaring king of animals beneath the ornate lettering “Ars Gratia Artis” (art for art’s sake). Goldstein looped the short sequence so that the lion seemed to be doomed to roar until eternity. My video “Liberation Day” shows the deliverance of the lion Goldstein once trapped in the loop. A black hole replaces the lions position, only the letters “Ars Gratia Artis” remain.
