This video work has been edited together from interviews with three Irish Hunger Strikers. Each interviewee responds to questions on their prison experiences from the 1981 Hunger Strike and provides a memorial anchor of this event. Another image is inserted in the interviews that displays the rehearsal of a local theatre production, written by ex-prisoners, that represents their experiences in a vernacular form. The empty stage suggests the playing out of events referred to in the interviews. The relationship creates a series of translations/representations of historical experience from memory. However such events are mediated and constructed from documentary materials and this video work reminds us of the unreliable nature of memory in contested political history.
