“In Between” is a video loop that metaphorically addresses the transitional time between childhood and adulthood. When I became a mother, my art production shifted due to both my concerns as a new mother and the pragmatics of childcare (as a landscape photographer driving for hours scouting for sites and hiking around for the best vantage points became impossible). Working in video allowed me to continue production with lens-based media, but opened new possibilities as well: incorporating performance, embracing chance and collaboration, and provided the opportunity to use my experiences and concerns as a mother as creative material. My daughter is now reaching adolescence. Adolescence is a tumultuous and exciting time both physically and emotionally; the development of one’s identity is accompanied by changes of puberty and cognitive growth. Negotiating this time involves balancing self with family and peer expectations. This video is a result of an artist in residency where I worked with 7th and 8th grade students at Northern Hills Middle School in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
