In ‘Moving Stories’ the Belgian artist Nicolas Provost (b. 1969) takes us on a trip to the skies. From diverse camera angles we follow a flight with a Boeing aircraft. Images taken from the ground, from the passenger’s seats, from the cockpit and from other aeroplanes are processed in a convincing continuity. A young man and a woman carry on a conversation off-screen. Without ever letting us see them, Provost allows these two characters to appeal to our imagination. Are they in the aircraft, or on the ground? What precisely are they planning? Do they know something that we do not? In his video Provost gives no unambiguous answer, but in seven minutes presents both moments of tension and danger and of Hollywood romanticism. The soundtrack plays a crucial role in this.
Film is a recurrent theme in Provost’s work. He is chiefly interested in how cinema can tell a story and how media play an important role in creating our collective memory, in which reality can sometimes no longer be distinguished from fiction.
