Hany Rashed uses his GIFs to give new vibrancy to his daily observations and whereabouts. From the repetitive lines of windows of decaying red-brick buildings and gray concrete block panel constructions, to twitching snippets from old film and music icons, the artist manipulates the moving images with various effects like slit-scanning and glitchy distortions, and adds multilayered soundtracks to create very short quivering films. On the verge between the past and the present, the jerkiness and repetition of the image paired with the superposition of reverberating experimental electronic sounds amplify the contrast, and brings attention to a specific compelling nostalgic feature of art each time. Easy and quick to make through the features available on Instagram, the repetitive patterns of the animated short videos attempt to convey easily accessible meanings, reproducing the immediacy of the social media language.
