Combining a series of 39 audiovisual collages of original VOGUE covers and short video loops from science fiction and horror films, the static beautiful faces on the covers are obscured and replaced by animated creatures. They are hybrid identities caught in a permanent loop: half human, half animal, half man, and half machine. The modish, theatrical models become one with zombies, aliens, monsters, and humanoids. The VOGUE covers breathe and roar, and some have a language and speak of language. Herbert can be heard saying, ‘This soul is a prisoner of his own body.’ Grace screams, ‘The limits of my language are the limits of my world.’ Wittgenstein is quoted as saying that putting philosophy into alien, non-human mouths makes the hybrid beings seem more human but no less alienating.
